About the piece

Gowanus Over and Out follows the aural traces of the narrowcast audio exhibit Sib Radio Gowanus curated last year for the exhibition Postcards from Gowanus (Cabinet Magazine Gallery, March 17-20 2010, Gowanus, Brooklyn). The conceptual backbone of the project was to create a sonic wallpaper that would reflect the aural undertones, both real and imagined, of the area surrounding the gallery. It also served as an organic sonotopia that inhabited the audiovisual exhibits in a process of associative interaction. Responding to a call for works, a total of 44 US and international artists from diverse creative backgrounds contributed works ranging from drones and field recordings to spoken word pieces and experimental sonic artworks. Gowanus Over and Out attempts to offer a 27 minute glimpse into some of the different facets of the exhibit while at the same time being its own self-expanding universe of sounds.

Hello,

I hope you are well. Just wanted to give you a heads-up about a special 4 hour radioshow that I compiled for WGXC: Hands-on Radio (90.7-FM). This radio station is based in the Acra/Catskill/Hudson area in upstate NY and is a program of free103point9.org.

The show will be broadcast next saturday from 12pm - 4pm (EDT) as part of WGXC's "Transmission Arts" series and it features samples of experimental sound works submitted for "Sib Radio Gowanus".

For this program I tried to create a compact and coherent 4 hour mix containing samples of all the submitted works. The overall result is reflecting the original content, atmosphere and idea of the exhibit. Below I copy the tracklist and links to the artists' websites. Sib (Sounds-in-between) Radio Gowanus is a narrowcast audio exhibit that will run in conjunction with the exhibition Postcards from Gowanus which will occur at Cabinet Magazine's gallery in Gowanus March 17-19, with a closing reception and live performances on Friday, March 19 from 6-9pm.

Sib Radio Gowanus essentially bridges the space between the inaudible, invisible (and yet real) ethereal and the physically present exhibits inside the gallery. The audience will be able to experience Sib Radio Gowanus by wearing the radio headsets provided by the gallery supervisors.

Sib Radio Gowanus has collected artworks by 43 musicians and sound artists from the US, Canada, Greece, UK, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia and a total of 17 hours of ambient soundscapes, field recordings, drones and experimental compositions inspired by or attuned to the undertones of the Gowanus landscape.

About the exhibition

The Postcards from Gowanus exhibit and radio narrowcast will occur at Cabinet's gallery space March 17-19, with a closing reception and performances on Friday, March 19 from 6-9pm.

The program is collaboratively organized by artists Penny Duff(exhibit), Gabrielle Herbst(performances), and Maria Papadomanolaki(radio) as part of Cabinet's Intern Initiative Program and is sponsored in part by free103point9.

Cabinet is located at 300 Nevins Street between Union and Sackett Streets in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 12–6pm, and by appointment.

A few words from the curator

Around the mid-1950s, Guy Debord coined a new genre of city mapping and exploration under the alias of Psychogeography. The serious “academic” model of creative expression was refined into a playful, intuitive and inventive quest of unseen and undiscovered urban cues and layers. “Postcards from Gowanus” and its radio exhibit “Sib Radio Gowanus” find a significant point of reference to the Debordian state of mind and suggest a new eye, ear and psyche to the landscape of Gowanus.

The actual exhibits in the gallery claim a physical presence while the ethereal soundscapes create a new intimate locale inside the listener’s mind and psyche. “Sib Radio Gowanus” echoes the idea of radio as a wunderkammer. However, it surrogates this notion to an organic sonotopia that inhabits the audiovisual exhibits in a process of associative interaction.

On a final note, the exhibition, as its title reveals, offers fragments of the artists’ audiovisual expeditions in the form of postcard-artifacts that encapsulate, in the best possible and “timeless” manner, the essence of the experienced urban environments. “Postcards from Gowanus” is a short but dense time travel to the heterogeneous manifestations of the surrounding area as encountered in snapshot mode by the different participants.

Gowanus Ringtones by Hethre Contant

Hethre Contant, participant artist in "Sib Radio Gowanus", is offering four free Gowanus ringtones. These four ringtones were created from a collection of audio fragments recorded at the Gowanus Canal. GowanusFootfalls25 and GowanusWat15 are lifelike RealTones taken straight from the original recording. GowanusRev8Tone is a highly processed BeepTone, and Gowanus12Tone is a pitch-shifted TwelveTone.

The tricky part is getting the ringtones from our link to your phone. Here is one way: Download the ringtones (.mp3) from the link below to your computer. Then go to one of the many ringtone-generating websites (If you search "make your own ringtone" you will find a plethora). Upload the .mp3 from your computer to the website. Then follow the directions that the ringtone-generating website gives you. In the Future there will be a better way to share ringtones. Stay Tuned!
